Sympathy whilst generally of good intentions is an empty emotion. It does nothing for others in a plight as to helping them forward. Some people are even "emotional vampires" in that in giving sympathy they steal the energy of others and then when they think they have had their fill they move on. It can lead to a worse situation for the recipient than before they indulged in listening.
