If we don't tell others, if others don't know then nothing is going to move on or get better. People are not "mind readers" they need to know what you think or do or want to do or where you are, especially in a work environment. Good communications bring about a better and more orderly life with better people and situations. Make sure that you take the time and not have that "I can't be bothered" attitude as others eventually will give up on you and even perhaps overlook you in promotions at work.
